• General FAQ\'s
  • Does window film have to be dark to work?

    lharral

It is a myth that window film has to be dark to be effective. State laws are in effect that outlaw very dark (black-out) auto tint. Our window films come in several different light transmissions - all being neutral in appearance. Auto tint laws vary from state to state. Check your local laws to ensure that your film selection is in compliance.

  • How can I find local car tint laws?

    lharral

Each state, Canadian province and Puerto Rico has car tint laws governing the darkness, reflectivity, and colors allowed on vehicles. In all cases, refer to you local authority for enforcement policies, current window tinting laws, rules or regulations as the final authority to car tint laws in your area.

  • Can you install film on top of film?

    lharral

Generally, it is not recommended to install film on top of film. "Stacking" solar control films can often result in the glass becoming too warm, raising glass temperatures beyond the manufacturer's suggested limits. Excessive heat can cause seal damage (on dual pane units) or glass breakage. If the glass is tempered and single pane, stacking films will not necessarily cause damage, however, always remember, that warranties are voided by film stacking or "layering."

  • When is the best time to install window film?

    lharral

It is safe to apply the film year-round. We recommend applying the film to cool glass, avoiding direct sunlight.

  • How long does window film last?

    lharral

Many of our professionally-installed window films come with a lifetime warranty against cracking, peeling, adhesive failure or demetallizing. (Some restrictions and limitations apply.)

Each of our window film brands comes with a comprehensive warranty.

  • Will window film distort my vision while looking out the window?

    lharral

Window films are virtually undetectable after the installation and curing period and are extremely optically clear. Most architectural films are bonded to the glass with a special mounting adhesive called "CDF," meaning "clear, distortion-free." Most users will agree that visual acuity is often increased with window tints because glare is reduced, greatly reducing eyestrain.

  • Can window film help reduce the glare on my television and computer screen?

    lharral

Absolutely. Window film reduces glare and helps eliminate eye fatigue.

  • Will window film darken the interior of my home or building?

    lharral

No. Window films will maintain the natural colors of your interior spaces. With less need for draperies, curtains, blinds, and shades, rooms may actually brighten significantly.

  • Can window film be installed on odd-shaped windows?

    lharral

Yes. Professionally installed window film can fit virtually any size and shape of flat-glass window.

  • What are window films?

    lharral

Window films constitute a wide family of protective, thin-film products that serve a variety of useful proposes. Most are intended for application to glass surfaces and are made from the highest quality, optically clear polyester films, treated, coated, and laminated in various ways through vacuum metalizing, sputtering coating, chemical dyeing or pigmentation. Special adhesives and scratch-resistant coatings make the films extremely durable and bond well to glass and other materials. Solutia Performance Films provides hundreds of unique films used for automotivearchitectural, and residential applications to help control the sun's heat, glare, and ultraviolet light, or provide color and patterned decoration. Others are used to make glass safer and more secure, or to invisibly help protect auto paint from stone chips and abrasion.

  • About cost and maintenance of window films
  • Do the window films require special care or cleaning?

    lharral

Not really. While not quite as hard as glass, our window films are extremely scratch-resistant and may be cleaned with common household cleaners, non-abrasive paper towels, or cotton cleaning cloths. Caution should be exercised to prevent extreme gouging by hard, sharp, metallic objects.

  • How much do window films cost?

    lharral

    A. The cost of solar or security film will vary with the thickness, type of material, size of the vehicle, building and the market location. Authorized dealers and retailers can provide you with an estimate at no charge.

  • Can I install window film myself?

    lharral

Our films must be installed by a professional installer using highly specialized equipment and techniques. If you like to Do-it-Yourself, we recommend using Gila films which is available at major retail locations.

  • I often see purple bubbling window film on cars, does all window film do this over time?

    lharral

No. Purple, bubbling film is a sign of a very low grade window film whose mounting adhesive and dye components have broken down. Our window tints are warranted against this, using more stable and advanced dye chemistries and/or permanent metal layers that do not discolor over time.

  • Why do I need window film on my windows?

    lharral

Window films help solve a variety of problems such as uncomfortable heat and glare, high energy costs, fading of interior furnishings and much more. Even with window treatments such as draperies, curtains, blinds and shades, the sun will often damage these treatments and furnishings. Window film helps protect against these damages.  Likewise, auto tint helps protect against the fading of your vehicle’s interior. Most importantly, whether in a building or automobile, window tints help make occupants feel more comfortable.

  • About energy efficient window films
  • What is "U-value"?

    lharral

"U-Value" measures the rate of heat passing through a material. A higher number indicates more heat passing through.

  • What is "R-value"?

    lharral

In the construction industry, "R-Value" measures thermal resistance or how well a material blocks heat. The larger the number, the better the insulating performance.

  • How much difference does an extra pane of glass make?

    lharral

Quite a bit. A double-pane window is thermally insulated by a gas trapped between two panes of glass, and effectively doubles the insulating performance of a single-pane window. To get that same kind of insulating power from a thin, transparent window film added to single-pane glass is impressive - and a lot more affordable.

  • What is "low-e" thermal window film?

    lharral

"Low-e" is short for "low emissivity.” Low-e thermal window film absorbs and emits relatively low levels of radiant thermal energy. Therefore, low-e films mainly reflect radiant thermal energy back to its source, keeping the heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated (keeping heat out in the summer and in during the winter), while letting visible light pass through.

  • Does window film help reduce the heat in a room when the sun comes shining through?

    lharral

Yes. Up to 75% of the heat is rejected by window film. You need not be afraid of installing beautiful windows for fear of too much heat.

  • About paint protection films
  • What is paint protection film for automobiles?

    lharral

Paint Protection Film, sometimes referred to as Clear Bra, is a clear urethane film that is applied to the leading painted surfaces of a new car in order to help protect the paint. The ultra-durable, sacrificial shield helps defend against abrasions, nicks and scratches from insects, small road debris and winter sand and salt, resulting in year-round protection.

  • About security and safety window film
  • How does security and safety film work?

    lharral

In both automotive and architectural applications, the film, which is available in a variety of thicknesses and tints, is generally applied to the interior of the glass, though specialized exterior films are available. In the event of an impact or explosion, the film serves to reduce the likelihood of glass breakage, but where shattering does occur they help hold the pieces safely in place. The films have an exceptionally strong, energy-absorbing mounting adhesive, and are composed of polyester film layers that are extremely high in tensile and break strength.

  • Will security and safety film stop a bullet?

    lharral

No blanket statement can be made about this. There are many reported instances where this has occurred, but the ballistic variables are too numerous to allow generalizations. The size, shape, mass, velocity, and trajectory of the bullet as well as the composition of glass on which it is installed make it dangerous to make any precise, warrantable claims. Generally, smaller caliber bullets can be, in differing circumstances, deflected, slowed, and occasionally stopped altogether. But no film company in the industry is yet justified in making warranted statements about their films being "bullet-proof" or even "bullet-resistant," until such time as fully defined criteria and controlled tests are in place that are nationally or internationally recognized. However, we do know that some specified films on glass provide substantial penetration resistance, safety hazard mitigation, and a persistent weather seal in simulated events and controlled tests with hurled bricks, rocks, crowbars, hammers, bomb blasts, shotgun blasts, seismic events, and windborne debris.

  • What happens when the window breaks?

    lharral

If the window breaks, the window film should hold the glass in place, thus reducing an incidence of injury or damage to furnishings.

  • About solar protection window films
  • How much protection will UV window solar film provide?

    lharral

In both automotive and architectural applications, Llumar solar films can reduce harmful ultraviolet rays by 96 to 99.9 percent, depending upon the specific film. Many films will additionally reduce glare by over 90% and reduce solar heat gain by 77%.

  • What are "UV" rays?

    lharral

"UV" refers to ultraviolet light, that invisible and unhealthy radiation just beyond violet in the visible spectrum. UV rays contribute to fading of interior furnishings.

  • What would the SPF (sun protection factor) be for window film, using the same scale used by the sunscreen manufactures?

    lharral

Since an SPF 15 allows you to stay in the sun without burning fifteen times longer than you could if you didn't use any sunscreen, the calculation of the SPF for window film is fairly easy. The number is very large indeed. If the film product allows less than 1% UV transmission, the SPF would be about 100 or more. With 1.5% UV transmission, the SPF is 66.66. With a UV transmission of 2%, the SPF would be 50, etc. Simply divide 100 by the percentage of UV transmission. Make sure that your UV transmission number covers the whole range of UVA and UVB radiation. NOTICE: While this computation is easy to perform, it must be said that most dermatologists don't think numbers larger than about 20 are meaningful. Moreover, these SPF numbers are officially determined by actual skin testing according to an established experimental protocol. It is not permissible to make such claims about actual SPF numbers without having these skin tests performed by a qualified laboratory.

  • What is the carbon footprint of window film?

    lharral

According to a Life Cycle Assessment conducted by a third party, architectural film becomes carbon neutral in less than two months after installation. With an average service life of 15 years, this means that these products are typically providing 14-plus years of greenhouse gas reductions after accounting for the products' total carbon footprint.

The study used "average" non-low-e architectural film with Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.36. Higher performance products, such as EnerLogic® films, will become carbon neutral even faster.
